Ode to Navy

Classic design
This beautiful, deep color evokes so many good feelings and images for me. It brings to mind boat cushions with crisp white piping; stately, dark wood studies; and smartly dressed business men and women bustling about the tall buildings of the Financial District, to name a few.
It’s worth noting here that navy blue was the color of choice for the Kennedy administration when choosing paint for the presidential limousine, a Lincoln Continental convertible. It was an unprecedented departure from black, as navy was considered to appear “more youthful and sophisticated”. I like their instinct.
One of my style inspirations, Lauren Fornes (@laurenfornes), recently posted on Instagram about a meeting that took place between her and the grandson of Bunny Mellon. They recalled anecdotes about the iconic horticulturalist and gardener: “My favorite was a conversation between Bunny and Hubert Givenchy, as he neared full retirement. She was concerned who would make her custom navy t-shirts that were a wardrobe staple. To which Givenchy recommended, ‘An American retailer called Land’s End. Size medium.’”
Naturally, I ordered a navy t-shirt from Land’s End, and I have to say - I highly recommend. I am excited to use this color more in our home and in my closet.
Well living
As always, in curating my navy favorites I prioritized picks that have minimal to no synthetic materials. I particularly sought to include options that meet wellness-based criteria such as being OEKO-TEX certified.
